Souleyman Messalti is an award-winning French-Algerian documentary filmmaker and photojournalist specializing in investigative journalism and hostile environments reporting based in Mexico City.
After obtaining a Master's degree in cinematography in London, he has traveled around the world covering topics such as the acid attack crisis in India, the aftermath of the 1965 genocide in Indonesia, disappearances in Mexico and the democracy movements in Hong Kong, among others. He has collaborated for media outlets such as The New York Times, VICE, the BBC, National Geographic, Al Jazeera, etc.
Between 2022 and early 2024, Souleyman was the head of visual reportage for Latin America’s acclaimed magazine Gatopardo.
He is the founder and director of ALT* Film Festival, Latin America’s first LGBT+ festival entirely dedicated to documentaries.
Souleyman films and edits his own documentaries, and speaks French, English and Spanish.
